Fisching for Forgeries

Even the youngest member of our association has already written a book: Within a rarely treated subject – i.e. the chess autographs and their forgeries – he has meticulously dealt with the handwriting and signatures of Bobby Fischer as well as with the fakes having appeared at eBay in particular. In addition to a preface by GM Larry Evans the book contains an analysis by graphologist Sheila Lowe ...

... you will learn something more about the book with the gloriously colourful cover from the review by Phil Innes at Chessville.

  • Description
From the blurb (translated by R.B.): "In many respects the Middle Ages were an epoch full of the joys of life, an age of artistic creativity and innovation, an age of erudition but especially a playful age. Games served as a metaphor for the relations of man to the Creation, were the subjects of erudite discourses, educational instrument or more or less refined leisure activities – these aspects provide a backdrop for the medieval culture of play."

The trained archaeologist and present director of the Swiss Museum of Games has already published numerous articles in books and specialist journals, particularly in Board Game Studies (Yearbooks of the International Society for Board Game Studies) whose co-editor he is. His beautifully designed book Globusspiel und Himmelsschach - Brett- und Würfelspiele im Mittelalter was published only in a limited edition (Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt 1998. 64 pp. / Hardback, incl. mostly coloured illustrations.)

Mrs Eva Masthoff (Haltern am See) has informed me about a chess related article in the (just published) current issue of the German magazine Graphische Kunst - Internationale Zeitschrift für Buchkunst und Graphik.

According to Eva Masthoff it is a fabulous article by the editor Jürgen Schweitzer, entitled "Schachvergiftung! - die Schachillustrationen von Elke Rehder in 20 Jahren Elke Rehder Presse." [Chess poisoning! – the chess illustrations by Elke Rehder in 20 years of Elke Rehder press.]
The magazine is published in 3 different editions, and you can buy single issues; Edition C (single issue 18 € + postage) is the cheapest alternative (not numbered, without original graphics enclosed). Please see the website www.edition-curt-visel.de/index.htm for more details. (The current issue 2/2013 is not yet given on the site, will probably take some days.)

I am glad to announce the newest publication of my friend Jimmy Adams. In Norwich 2012 we talked about Gyula Breyer, and he told me, that he was working already more than 20 years on this topic. Now, five years later, I can hold his tremendously well researched The Chess Revolutionary, a book of incredible 876 pages, in my hands. Thank you, dear Jimmy, for all your efforts.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the chess club Königsspringer Haltern am See e.V. the book Halterner Schachspiegeleien … was published - just in time for the opening of the corresponding chess exhibition. A group of 8 authors has contributed to the book: Edmund Bruns, Thomas Gerlach, Bernhard E. Köster, Eva Masthoff, Horstfried Masthoff, Michael Rath, Thomas Schniederjan and Dieter Stüber.

This attractive and nicely illustrated book (with numerous colour images) offers the reader an entertaining mixture of articles widely related to the current exhibition. Central themes are not only the literature of chess incl. chess fiction, also elsewhere mostly neglected fringe areas such as chess ex libris and stamps have been included, and further contributions deal with the role of chess in the period of National Socialism or with chess sets from the wartime. As the book contains a chronicle of the local chess club Königsspringer Haltern am See e.V., it is also of particular interest for collectors of "Festschriften" (commemorative publications), here the Contents (jpg file) for your information. The beautiful bookplate of our member Josep Alió has been reproduced on the front cover, and in the book you will find a few more ex libris of KWA members (Rudolf Glenk, Michael Negele, Lothar Schmid and the late Jean Mennerat). The high-quality get-up and the reasonable price should make a purchase decision easy.

We still quote a reader's feedback (e-mail by Dr. Erik Skovenborg [Denmark] to co-author Eva Masthoff, 02/12/2012):

"One of my pleasures this weekend was the book of Schachspiegeleien with a marvelous collection of learned and interesting comments on the game of chess. The authors ... really know what they are writing about and also know how to make the subject interesting for the reader. In today’s world of visual images the beautiful bookplates find a natural and well-deserved place with their imaginative, pictorial designs and the entertaining story behind each plate. In Denmark the knowledge and use of bookplates is in retreat and decline, however, books like this book on chess are one of the most intelligent and entertaining ways of spreading information about the life and world of exlibris. I congratulate all the authors on a fine job and also congratulations to the skillful lay-outers and excellent printers for such a beautiful book paying credit to each work of art with fine details in black-and-white and colours. Bravo!"

John Townsend

Historical notes on some chess players

John Townsend:

My new book, Historical notes on some chess players, is now available in a limited edition of one hundred copies. It is a hardback, size 234 x 156 mm., bound in green cloth, with spine and upper cover lettered in brass. It is a collection of biographical notes on some British chess personalities of the nineteenth century. Here will be found very much that is new. The first chapter has brief notes about a very large number of players having in common that they were all members of the old London Chess Club, founded in 1807. Some are familiar names, including Alexander McDonnell, William Lewis, Deschapelles, Richard Penn, Daniel Harrwitz, William M. Popert, Frederick Lokes Slous, George Perigal, Augustus Mongredien, and George Webb Medley, while others are hardly known and sometimes no more than names appearing in the club's records.

Detailed studies follow of Jacob Sarratt, John Brand, C.F. Smith, and Charles Henry Stanley. The aim has been to paint the players' lives against the background of the changing times and places in which they lived. There are many revelations, some startling.

The final chapter is an update on my research into Howard Staunton's former identity, a topic which was introduced in my 2011 book, Notes on the life of Howard Staunton. It builds on the discovery that the famous man was at one time known by the name of Charles Sta(u)nton.

It is hoped that this blend of little about many followed by much about few will be an agreeable formula. Illustrating that chess players are individuals, the subjects under discussion include one cricketer, one freemason, two military officers, two "lunatics", one prisoner in jail, one homophobe, one alcoholic, and one suicide - some players falling into more than one category! The book is extensively researched, and is based on new historical material, which is the raison d'être for the book. Copious notes at the end of each chapter quote source references, etc., and there is an index of names. With three illustrative games, one problem, four chess diagrams; x + 146 pp.

The price of one copy sent by airmail to Europe is 23.10 pounds. You can pay by PayPal (when a 3% surcharge will be applied to cover costs) or by bank transfer (please ask for our bank account details). Otherwise, fuller details about ordering can be found on this web page:

In the wake of the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the Carrera's Treatise on Chess (1617), Santo Daniele Spina's writing presents in modern chess notation with many diagrams the odds theory exposed in the fifth book of Il gioco degli scacchi (The Game of Chess) in comparison with Ruy Lopez, Gianutio and Salvio and it is another step forward with regard to English translation by William Lewis (1822).

In the fifth book, divided into thirty-one chapters, Carrera examines the openings giving the first move to Black or to White according to the odds type offered weaker chess player.

Often buried in oblivion, Ignaz Kolisch (1837-1889) was one of the leading chess players in the period 1859-1867, before he became a bank director with some help from the Rothschild family and later on a "Baron von Kolisch" as well as an eminent chess patron. Fabrizio Zavatarelli has raised an outstanding chess literary monument to that most interesting, witty and charming personality. His deeply researched work contains 324 annotated Kolisch games, more than the double of the previously known fund, and he gives all found sources with their possible additional information. Moreover a lot of other coeval top chess masters are portrayed thus sketching a picture of the European chess scene at that time. Many diagrams, rare photographs, illustrations and drawings enrich the monograph which leaves a mark of excellence in the series of chess biographies by McFarland.

Alain Fayard lives in Rome but he’s genuine French, a strong chess player and an enthusiastic collector of chess literature. Till midst of the nineties he was an editor of "Europe Echecs" and as it seems, he has unfortunately got into loads of trouble (and court proceedings) with his biography on Joël Lautier (1993) due to an alleged breach of copyright. In the end the publisher Bernard Grasset was at his wits’ end and withdrew the total edition from the market. An unpleasant story which our friend would prefer to forget – but his book turned into a collector’s rarity by that.

Recently a long-standing friend of Ken Whyld has joined us whose outstanding works as a chess publicist may fill complete metres long shelves. (Particularly if you add the volumes of CHESS Monthly which has been edited since August 1991 by Jimmy Adams as a technical editor, then from spring 1992 - after the MacMillam crash – as an editor.)
Impressive are the tournament books published together with Dale Brandreth: Baden-Baden 1925, Bled 1931 or Moscow 1935, each based on the Russian originals, as well as Bogoljubov’s Chigorin biography, translated by Jimmy into English. But my definite favourite is and will remain "Artist of the Chessboard", herewith Johannes Zukertort was finally dedicated in 1989 a worthy game collection and biography.

PS (07-02-2016):
A new edition of the above Zukertort biogrophy was published by New In Chess 2014 (paperback, 541 pp.).
