Being a committed board member of the "Schwalbe" (secretary and 2nd chairman) since about 10 years, Günter Büsing still had the time to complete together with Hans Gruber this joint production (including some contributions by Ulrich Ring, bernd ellinghoven and Dieter Müller. Munich 1996, 51 pp.) – it erects a small memorial in honour of the unforgotten problem composer and helpmate expert Dr. John Niemann (19/04/1905 - 22/07/1990).

The award just given the German magazine KARL by the DSB (German Chess Federation), the Deutsche Schachpreis 2014, was certainly a pleasing surprise: www.schachbund.de/news/der-deutsche-schachpreis-2014.html.
Contents of issue 2/2014 (PDF)
At the beginning only a chess club magazine, things changed basically when from issue 2/2001 KARL – das kulturelle Schachmagazin was available throughout Germany. So it is a still very young magazine and at the same time the first chess magazine to receive this award. Its presentation by a DSB official will take place at the Weimar meeting in November.
Over the years quite a lot of our members have contributed to this quarterly, I can mention only few by name here. Former KWA member Johannes Fischer was co-editor for some years and still contributes to each issue. For already many years Michael Ehn, together with Ernst Strouhal, is running an interesting chess historical column, but unquestionably the most diligent writer among our members was and still is Michael Negele, nearly in each issue you will find a comprehensive article by him: still for the last issue 1/2014 (dealing mainly with problem chess) he wrote – together with Tomasz Lissowski – about Dawid Przepiórka, and for the current issue (focus on "motivation") he has prepared an article on Henry E. Bird.
We still link an interview with KARL editor Harry Schaack by Thomas Binder, published in Glarean Magazin (in German): glareanverlag.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/schach-zeitschrift-karl-jubilaeum-schaack_interview_glarean-magazin/

- Description
Anatoli Karpov, the great world chess champion, visited Cádiz, the oldest city of Occident located in the South of Spain (Andalucía), more than 40 years ago to play a multiple game. It was an unusual fact, never before -nor ever after, to date- a current world chess champion had visited the oldest city in the West to display his teaching. The event aroused unusual expectation.
It has been the only time in the history of the oldest city in the West, called “La Tacita de Plata”, in which a current world chess champion has attended an organized event that aroused unusual expectations.
In Karpov... in Cádiz! Prof. Jesús Miguel Seoane recounts in a way that is both agile and meticulous and with unrestrained enthusiasm what happened on the magical evening of February 4, 1981, when at the main office of the Caja de Ahorros de Ronda on Andalusia Avenue in Cádiz, the World Champion, Anatoli Karpov, faced 23 players simultaneously in unforgettable chess games.
Such is the detail, information, warmth, and commitment that Prof. Jesús M. Seoane puts into the account of everything that happened that night in the Tacita de Plata, that it would be superfluous to comment or add any relevant aspect here. What must be emphasized is the fact that, in that memorable the famous Simultaneous, anecdotes aside, the champion won 18 times and gave up 5 draws, something exceptional and that satisfied both Anatoli Karpov and the excellent players who faced the at that time world champion; that is the objective fact that the chronicles collected; This book reflects, in addition to all that, the fascination with which the event was lived among those who were lucky enough to participate or attend it, singularly, that of the child that the author of this book was at that time who, although he did not attend to the event, this would mark a turning point shortly after in his life.

In 2004 our chess historian from Budapest has presented a concise overview of the Hungarian chess history where a text page is always opposite to a page with photographs or illustrations. It is quite remarkable that the sheet of stamps published at the same time and reproduced on the front (showing a position from the "Hungarian Opening") forms the basis of the book: On each of the 64 stamps a text in miniature has been printed reflecting a phase of Hungarian chess history – they may be read with the help of a magnifying glass. These miniature texts (by Iván Bottlik as well) correspond to a large degree to the book chapters. An original collector’s item supplementing the book!

Recently a biography of Vera Menchik-Stevenson has been published, written by our member Jan Kalendovský. Michael Negele has provided a short presentation with some excerpts from the book:
A couple of weeks ago I received a parcel from Prague which contained a nice surprise:
My long-term chess friend Jan Kalendovský from Brno in the Czech Republic had sent his most recent publication.
His book is dealing with the life-story and chess career of the former Czech, then British Ladies World Chess Champion Vera Menchik-Stevenson. The title is Královna Šachu Věra Menčíková - easy to understand: Chess Queen Vera Menchik / Schachkönigin Vera Menchik.
Even if I am not able to read Czech, I like to share some impressions when delving into this wonderful book.
After browsing through the nicely produced hardcover edition of 150 pages and 20.5x26.5 cm size, I was amazed by the high quality of the overall production: An attractive layout is presented on good paper quality and especially includes an unexpectedly huge amount of illustrations never seen before.
Congratulations to the author, a translation into English would be highly appreciated.
More details on the distribution by the JAKURA publishing house can for sure be received from the author.

German master Kurt Richter (1900–1969) made significant contributions to the chess world as a player, and as an editor and author. Unassuming in real life, Richter was a fearsome opponent who expressed himself mainly through his over-the-board results, as well as through his chess journalism and literary output. He was responsible for several innovative openings, some of which gained renewed status in later years.
This overview of his life and games sheds light on a player who should be better known, with much never-before-seen material. Examples of his entertaining writings on chess are included, some featuring his fictitious student opponent, Dr. Zabel. A wide selection of games illustrates the surprising combinations and brilliant style of play that earned him the title "The Executioner of Berlin."

Claudio Selleri (Le Due Torri) has informed us about a new historical chess book, written by Alessandro Sanvito.
Founded in 1881, the Società Scacchistica Milanese has been at the centre of some of the most important events in Italy’s rich chess history. In more recent decades the club has been particularly active, with club directors often going on to provide leadership for the Italian Chess Federation.
The club has hosted legendary world champions such as Alekhine and Tal, produced national champions, and been home to some of the most celebrated Italian tournaments.
Internationally known chess historian Alessandro Sanvito has at last made true his promise to two of the most famous Presidents of the Società Scacchistica Milanese, Count Giancarlo Dal Verme and Giovanni Ferrantes, to compile a history of Milanese chess so as to preserve forever this unique chapter of Italian chess history. The result is a fascinating look at the vital role of the nobil giuoco in the life of one of Italy’s greatest cities. Starting with Società Scacchistica Milanese’s foundation over a century ago at the Café del Leone, Sanvito carefully chronicles the club’s key tournaments, historic homes and presidential roll call up to the ’60s.
Inside rare vintage photos and unpublished games.
In addition to the standard paperback edition, there is also a superbly crafted collectors’ limited hardcover edition of 99 copies (35.00 euros p/c). Reserve your copy at info@scacco.it.

Eric Ruch presents here the first volume of a comprehensive history of correspondence chess and follows with that an old suggestion of Eduard Dyckhoff ["Who will write us the history of correspondence chess?"]. The more than 70 included games reproduced from the period 1804 to 1840 (few played till 1843) are predominantly provided with contemporary comments as well as numerous diagrams. A 16-page appendix with black and white illustrations (reproduced are old letters and pages from books) completes the work whose English edition we hopefully can expect soon.

A new chess novella has been published by the Italian author Paolo Maurensig (well-known in chess circles for his novel The Lüneburg Variation), and interestingly enough the story is set in Bolzano, with the chess master Daniel Harrwitz as a central character. No wonder that our member and Harrwitz researcher Luca D’Ambrosio is involved in the presentation of the book.
Indeed Luca D’Ambrosio’s research (see our former report New Findings on Daniel Harrwitz) had inspired Paolo Maurensig for that story, and the author will come to Bolzano on Wednesday, 21/11/2012 to present his new work at 6 pm in the Old Bolzano Town-hall. The evening will be introduced by Luca D’Ambrosio's lecture on his latest research. More information (in German/Italian) on the following pages:
- Book presentation www.schachbund.it (and further links given there)
- Evening with the author www.arciscacchi.it/Sito01/Locandina.jpg
We hope that a translation of the novella into other European languages will still be realized.
On 11th of December Luca D’Ambrosio will again give a presentation about Harrwitz (in German), this time as a supporting event of the exhibition Simon and Sarah in Bozen at Castle Maretsch.

In this monumental and yet compact "chess guide" by the pair of authors Nicolas Giffard and Alain Biénabe the latter has dedicated more than 530(!) pages alone to chess composition in the course of which he throws a light on all recesses of this genre – a real treasure trove for problem friends. You may merely regret that this essential reference work only exists in French.

Bernd Gräfrath, author of numerous articles and contributions in the field of (problem) chess, presents his latest work Lichtbilder und Schachkompositionen [Photographs and Chess Compositions], a delightful book published in a very small edition only.
A first edition of 10 copies was followed by a second slightly revised edition of again 10 copies. Not to purchase, as all copies will be (partly already have been) given to selected problem friends or problemists.
The very attractive book contains a selection of 31 own compositions, all given with a diagram and detailed solutions/comments: some fairies but predominantly retro problems, i.e. proof games without or (mainly) with additional fairy conditions such as Losing Chess, the author’s favourite subject.
Each page with text is faced by a colourful photo (obviously from private tours) on the following page; as I learned from Bernd Gräfrath, the nice idea (to combine problems with photos in this way) traces back to Leif Schmidt and his booklet Natur [&] Skakproblem-Perler.
The photos are not made by simple digital printing but exposed and prepared on real photographic paper – together with the overall solid get-up of the book not a low-cost production.
