Aron Nimzowitsch

On the Road to Chess Mastery, 1886-1924

A "big hit" of our two Danish members is this exemplarily researched Nimzowitsch biography which was voted ChessCafe.com 2012 Book of the Year against strong international competition. But this is "only" the first part of an intended two-volume work – we hope that the authors take heart and energy from the success of the first volume to tackle and complete the successor volume as well. We are full of expectation!

More about the book in our Announcements.

A just released problem book by Michael Schlosser and Martin Minski stands in the tradition of T.R. Dawson’s and W. Pauly’s classic Asymmetry (A.C. White’s Christmas Series, 1927). Their work ASymmetrie contains a stupendous wealth of problems from all genres composed in the last ca 170 years, the earliest dating from 1841.

Price: 20 Euros (incl. postage in Germany)
The postage for foreign shipments (weight above 500 g) is 6 Euros.

You may directly order from the publisher via his online shop (where you can still find further problem books from his publishing house).

This composite work of the two well-known German chess composers is fascinating throughout, they deal exclusively with a special kind of aesthetically attractive problems, i.e. those with a symmetrical initial position and an asymmetric, generally paradoxical solution. From their own collection of 4000 problems they have selected the most interesting items – 649 in total, from orthodox mate problems to endgame studies, fairies and retros, even some originals have been included – you may have a look at the table of contents to get a short overview. Within the chapters all problems are given in chronological order, and each problem is depicted by a diagram followed by the solution, the latter mostly with additional smaller diagrams. The book is completed by a glossary (definitions of fairy [&] retro terms) as well as indexes of themes and authors.

We also learn from the preface (we link a scan here for our German speaking readers) that the authors have invested many years to finish their project, and particularly in the solutions they have spared no effort to provide entertaining and inventive comments. Fortunately the latter are mostly intelligible to OTB players with some basic knowledge of problem chess (and the help of the a.m. glossary), so this is not only a book for pronounced problem experts. Naturally there is a wide range as to the complexity of the problems and some will be more challenging than others – take it as a good sign of the variety of this absorbing anthology.

In view of the above advantages, the abundant content and the solid get-up of the book the price is very favourable, and I can only recommend this enjoyable publication: It belongs in every problem enthusiast’s library, and it will give you numerous hours of a stimulating read.

Efim Bogoljubow

Badische Illustrierte. Schachspalte 1946-1951

Really wonderful books are created by our member Martin Ramsauer for it belongs to his profession as a book conservator to derive pleasure from it. After his first work "Weihnachtsbäume im Schachproblem" (2003) there is now (2007) a new item from his workshop, bound in cloth and with an attractive "additional design" on the front: Bogoljubow's chess column of the "Badische Illustrierte Zeitung" 1946-51 has been reprinted in a limited edition (of 50 copies), with that a widely unknown chess column from the postwar years run incognito for a long time is available again. The content is rather unexpected as "Bogol" turns out first and foremost to be a problem columnist and moreover an occasional composer as well.

Belgian chess publications: an annotated bibliography

This teamwork of cash auditor and chairman is definitely a "raisin in the cake" of chess biblio-graphies, as the meticulous compilation of the complete Belgian chess literature mates here with an exquisite color printing whose impact is unveiled above all by the numerous pictures. Many information boxes (highlighted in color) on relevant authors, photographs of chess personalities, a correlation table (as to L/N and Cleveland) and an index of names complete a work which belongs to the required stock of each bibliographically interested chess friend.

Michael Dombrowsky

Berliner Schachlegenden

Erinnerungen und Portraits aus der Zeit vor und nach dem Mauerbau

Before joining our KWF[&]A group this year, Michael Dombrowsky has written a delightful book dealing with the Berlin chess scene of the 1950s / 60s and the chess legends of that period. The book is not only very attractive due to its nice layout (coloured diagrams!) prepared by the publisher Arno Nickel, but also to its content – the author brings back memories of a time where many of us were still young and possibly heard for the first time the names of those 10 legends portrayed in the book. So this is a welcome excursion into a part of German chess history, and simultaneously a very entertaining read with many anecdotes and hitherto unknown biographical details on the protagonists, as well as many accompanying games and game fragments (annotated by Helmut Reefschläger).

You will find the bibliographical data and excerpts from the book on the page of the Edition Marco Publishing House.

Moreover a review (in German) by our member Dr. Mario Ziegler in Glarean Magazin: Berliner Luft-Menschen.

Alessandro Sanvito

Bibliografia italiana degli scacchi

Le Due Torri, Bologna 2015 360 pp., ISBN 9788896076569 Special prize: 29.75 €

With Alessandro Sanvito an excellent authority in the field of chess history and chess bibliography belongs to our members – his outstanding work will be presented here. Generally the Italian chess guild is extraordinary active in this field – a look at the website of the C.C.I. Italiano will confirm that.

John Donaldson

Bobby Fischer and his world

The man, the player, the riddle, and the colorful characters who surrounded him

John Donaldson - Bobby Fischer and his world - frontcover
John Donaldson - Bobby Fischer and his world - frontcover

IM Donaldson examines Fischer’s life and career from his days as a child prodigy through the height of his World Championship triumph and into his tumultuous final years. Donaldson’s meticulous research has uncovered previously lost games and a wealth of unknown material about Fischer—ranging from his close friendships with players and supporters to his acrimonious relationships with organizers, journalists, lawyers, and publishers.

Bobby Fischer and His World is brought to life through a potpourri of first-hand accounts, interviews, letters, and articles by and about the colorful characters that inhabited Fischer’s world. Unifying this wide-ranging tale are over 100 photos and illustrations and 99 newly annotated games.

This is the story of Fischer the man and the player, shedding new light on the riddle of the most famous chessplayer in history.

World Chess Championship New York 2016

Carlsen vs. Karjakin - Front cover

Jon Crumiller and GM Lev Alburt have published a most interesting book on the World Championship Match between Magnus Carlsen and Sergei Karjakin last winter in New York City. As Bob van de Velde and I had the opportunity to visit that match during it´s desicive state, but also our friend Jon in Princeton, it is a nice remembrance to that trip.

The book itself offers an intriguing sight on the match and it´s background.

It was nearly 40 years ago that Albert Frank, with the help of Dr. Max Euwe, undertook a study on the psychopedagogy of chess at a high school in Kisangani (Zaïre). The question was if learning chess has a positive influence on the development of numerical and verbal aptitudes, Albert Frank has recorded the results of his research in his book from 1978. You can read a summary online, and meanwhile the book is also available as an electronic edition, see for that www.lulu.com/product/ebook/....
