In Holland, a biography on the chess publisher, journalist, writer and player Wim Andriessen has been published. Andriessen was an independent person in the Dutch chess scene, who as publisher of the magazine Schaakbulletin (Chess Bulletin) gave room to other voices than heard in circles of the Dutch chess establishment. As he was probably rather unknown abroad and because the biography has been written in Dutch, we requested from the author Marten Coerts, a former member of our Society, a short introduction of the biographee.

Book about publisher, chess player and chess writer Wim Andriessen

Three and a half years after he passed away, the publication of Wim Andriessen - Meester in het schaken, grootmeester in het uitgeven (Master in Chess, grandmaster in publishing) is a fact.

This book describes the personal and work life of Wilhelm Fredrik (Wim) Andriessen (1938-2017), publisher of chess books and magazines, chess player and chess writer. In the Netherlands Wim Andriessen was a well-known person. When he died a lot of Dutch newspapers wrote obituaries in their weekly chess columns.

Publisher

According to IM Gert Ligterink, former Dutch chess champion, Wim Andriessen should have earned the Max Euwe-ring prize, which is awarded to people who greatly contribute towards promoting chess in the Netherlands. Past winners of this prize include Jan Timman and Genna Sosonko. For Wim Andriessen was the founder and publisher of the best chess magazines ever: Dutch-language magazine Schaakbulletin (1968-1984), and its English sequel, the well-known New in Chess (1984 – now).

Andriessen was the first person to give strong Dutch chess players like Timman, Donner, Ree and Sosonko the opportunity to write articles about chess and their chess games. This tradition is continued in New in Chess with contributions from chess giants such as Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and Carlsen.

Journalist and chess player

Besides being a publisher Wim Andriessen was a chess journalist for Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant and a very strong chess player ranking among the best 20-30 chess players in the Netherlands in the sixties. Some 50 chess games against strong players like Jan Timman, Hein Donner, Kick Langeweg, and Lubomir Kavalek form an important part of this book.
