Obituaries of Members

 

In November 2015, the eldest member of our association, Dr. Benjamin "Billy" Levene left us in his 98th year. We give a note of remembrance.

Our originally Dutch member Jan van Reek passed away in far Thailand, his adopted country. We give a short obituary.

Our Belgian member Pierre Van Craenenbroeck has left us after a severe illness. Guy Van Habberney has written an obituary.


One of our doyens passed away end of October, 2015: Isaak M. Linder has left us only a few weeks before his 95th birthday. In remembrance of him we give this obituary.

 

Rolf Littorin
* 3 January 1923   † 3 September 2015 

Rolf Littorin, the great Swedish chess collector who was also a founding member of our association, is no longer with us. After a short illness he recently passed away at the age of 92. He leaves behind his wife Birgitta, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rolf will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by his family and his friends.

Rolf Littorin turned 90!


With a delay of 8 months we learned that our dear old friend, long-time KWA member and Steinitz biographer Kurt Landsberger had passed away. Martin Frère Hillyer has written an obituary.

 

The unexpected death of Roger Klittich has deeply touched all those who had known him. Michael Negele has provided an extensive obituary accompanied by a lot of photographs.
Moreover a short tribute to the deceased by Michael Clapham.

 

Michael Negele has provided an obituary of our late member Lothar Schmid as well as a series of photos from his archive, and Tony Gillam has contributed some memories of the friendship of Lothar Schmid and Ken Whyld.

 

The time of his KWA membership was only little more than a year: Our Belgian member Albert Frank passed away after a long and severe illness. We give a short tribute.

 

Our Danish member Knud Lysdal has unexpectedly left us only a few days after his 63rd birthday. Per Skjoldager paid tribute to his long-time friend by writing a personal obituary.


One of our doyens, Alex Crisovan from Switzerland, passed away end of November, 2012. Michael Negele has provided a short obituary.

 

Again we have to mourn a sad loss in Utrecht: Our Dutch friend Hans Engberts has left us much too early. An obituary by Michael Negele.


End of August, 2011 our member Uwe Johannes Durst passed away after a severe illness: An obituary by Michael Negele and Ralf Binnewirtz.


The early passing of Maria Łuczak in February 2011 has deeply affected us. A tribute to the deceased by Michael Negele and Ralf Binnewirtz.


In March 2009 we received the bad news from Italy, Prof. Carlo Alberto Pagni had unexpectedly departed this earth. An obituary by Ralf Binnewirtz et al. (2009-03-08).


Well advanced in years the French doyen of our association, Dr Jean Mennerat passed away in October 2007. An obituary by Ralf Binnewirtz (2007-11-24).


We lost our Dutch friend René van der Heijden much too early.

Our chess friend Horst Lüders (*February 13, 1927 † September 21, 2003) passed away after a short, severe illness. We remember the deceased: Horst Lüders Memorial Page.
