At the moment Antonio Rosino and Gunnar Finnlaugsson take part in the 20th Senior World Championship at the North-Italian town of Arco. The 11th and last round will take place on November 6th. There are 224 men [60+] and 21 women [50+] competing. Meanwhile only 223 men as the 72 year-old Norwegian Erling Fløtten died over the board in round 3. In the first round Gunnar played with Black against Dusan Rajkovic, the only player with 100% after five rounds.

Ra8?

Here Gunnar could get an advantage with 40...Rxd5. If 41.Rxd5, then 41...Qc4!! (double attack on the rooks combined with the threat 42...Bxf4+ winning the queen). Therefore White plays best 41.Nd2, but after 41...Rxd2! 42.Qxd2 Ne6 Black is excellent.

41.Bh4 Qb1 42.Ra4 Qb7 43.Nd4 Nd7 44.Rc6 Qb8 45.Qe4 a5 46.Rc3 Qb2 47.Rac4 a4 48.e6 Nf8 49.exf7+ Kxf7 50.d6 Qd2 51.Rf3 Ra7 52.dxe7 Rexe7 53.Bxe7 Rxe7 54.Qd5+ Kg7 55.Nf5+ 1-0.

Antonio Rosino is brooding...
