Scacchi e Scienze Applicate 26

Chess and Applied Sciences
(An International Review)
© 2007 by Antonietta Carminati
ISSN: 0392-0127, 112 p., large format
Romano Bellucci (Venice) has presented a new issue of his periodical Scacchi e Scienze Applicate [Vol. 24, Fasc. 26, 2006 (2007)]. This time again it contains several contributions from the pen of KWA members: Carlo Alberto Pagni [on CC tournaments organized during the first half of the 20th century by non specialized magazines]; Alessandro Sanvito [On the tracks of the Bonus Socius; Historical Chess Abstracts (column)]; Santo Daniele Spina [Bio-bibliographic index of chess players active in Sicily 1970-1974 (54 p.!)]; Lawrence Totaro [about Santiago Ramón y Cajal (Nobel prize in physiology 1906); Sigmund Freud and Chess].
Artistic chess (studies, problems) is well represented too in this delightful magazine.

Last year already the Aboca Museum in Sansepolcro, Italy published in a luxurious edition a chess historical work of / on Luca Pacioli, a mathematician from the Renaissance. It is a facsimile edition of "De Ludo Scachorum", a manuscript written about 1500 by Pacioli which was not found until the end of 2006 and which contained games played both according to the old medieval rules and in the new "a la rabiosa" way. The reprint has a cover made of goatskin and is inserted in a valuable oak case. An accompanying essay is offered together with the reprint: "Luca Pacioli’s Chess. Renaissance Evolution of a Mathematical Game" (in Italian) where our member Alessandro Sanvito has contributed to the comments of the 114 games. The latter points to the fact that the Ken Whyld Association has been mentioned in this important book.
Altogether this is delivered in a slip case, also shown on the museum's homepage where you will find further details on and illustrations of the works. The following conditions apply to purchase:
- The museum will give KWA members a generous 20% discount on the
   normal price (2,800.- Euro)
- No shipping charges
- Shipping directly to the address of the member
- Payment by swift bank transfer
- Orders have to be forwarded by the KWA. (Members who intend to buy
are requested to send their order to me binnewirtz@arcor.de, including their
postal address. I will forward the orders to the museum afterwards.)

You may also receive the above mentioned essay separately, the purchase price given here is 115.- Euro.

Below the leaflet on the publication as pdf-file as well as some scans from last year’s exhibition booklet [Pics 1-9] (texts in Italian/English).
[You can switch to the large pictures and back to the preview pictures respectively by simple mouse clicks.]

Recently (5 March 2008) a full-page article has been published in the Italian national newspaper La Repubblica on the possibility, that the chess drawings (diagrams) in the Pacioli manuscript were made by Leonardo da Vinci:
La mano di Leonardo ...

In this connection an additional "story from BBC News":
'Da Vinci link' to chess drawings by Christian Fraser (26/02/2008)
A further online article on this subject appeared in International Herald Tribune (Europe) Experts link Leonardo da Vinci to chess puzzles in long-lost Renaissance treatise (14/03/2008).

But there are also serious doubts, see
Historical Stalemate ... by Dylan Loeb McClain (The New York Times, 14 April 2008).
